Salaries by Major

The table below is from this NSF Info Brief. You can get a lot more information there.

The CRA summarizes this data as follows:

CS graduates were most likely to be employed in business and industry and to be working full-time. At the bachelor’s level, 82% of CS majors were employed in business and industry and 91% of them (along with engineering majors) had full-time jobs. At the master’s level, 76% worked in business/industry and 93% had full-time jobs.

CS graduates also earned high salaries. CS tied for second with health majors for the highest median salary at the bachelor’s level ($45,000) and tied for first with engineering at the master’s level ($65,000). This compared to median salaries among all science, engineering and health fields of $39,000 at the bachelor’s level and $56,000 at the master’s level.

Of course, remember that these are just predictions. It's always possible that tomorrow everyone in the world will stop using computers and dust off their slide rulers. Its possible.

Careers in Computer Science and Engineering Videos

Two videos from ieee.tv show interviews with people who work in the computer field. These videos give you an idea of the wide variety of jobs available to those who get a degree in CSE, CE, or CIS (all offered by our CSE department, of course!).

CSC Plans To Grow

From the state:

Computer Sciences Corp. plans to add even more employees than the 300 announced this month at the software firm’s Blythewood campus, a company official told The State last week.

CSC is expanding in the Midlands to accommodate new computer-service business with aerospace manufacturers. Over the past 30 years, the Columbia-area operation has developed software for insurers.

The company hopes to win even more aerospace work that could add as many as 700 more workers to the Blythewood campus on top of the 300 coming on board over the next year, said Ray August, president of CSC’s Blythewood insurance group.

Those expansions — spurred by the Columbia area’s low costs and customers who want work to stay in the U.S. instead of going overseas — would double CSC’s current employment, which stands at roughly 1,000 workers.

The article also had some number on salaries for software engineers in Columbia, they are:

Attend USC Engineering and Computing for Free

From the official announcement:

College of Engineerng and Computing and state of South Carolina officials announced a scholarship program on Wednesday, February 6 that will cover the difference between tuition costs and LIFE scholarships for in-state freshmen majoring in engineering and computing.

The new Engineering and Computing Expanded Life Scholarship (ECELS) program will mean that a minimum of 100 freshmen who also have LIFE scholarships can attend the university tuition-free beginning in fall 2008, said Dr. Michael Amiridis, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing.

Local Company Develops Xbox Live Title

Here is a news article from the State on a local company, founded by a USC grad, who is making games for the Xbox Live:

Forgive Drew Card if he looks bleary-eyed today.

He’s been up all night waiting on the release of his company’s new video game, “Poker Smash.”

At 4 a.m. today, “Poker Smash” became available on Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE Arcade, and Card soon will know if his gamble of founding a video game company in Lexington has paid off.

Career in the Games Industry

Our ACM student chapter is sponsoring a talk by Dan Amerson titled:

How to Prepare Yourself for a Job in the Games Industry

Things I Wish I Had Learned In College Because I Use Them Now

The talk will be on Thursday, January 31 at 11am in Swearingen Room 2A31.

Dan Amerson is the Technical Director for Emergent Game Technologies' Gamebryo Element, a cross-platform Game engine used in over 200 titles to date. Since joining the company in 2001, he has worked primarily on console rendering technologies for GameCube and Xbox 360 as well as multithreaded execution models. Prior to Emergent, Dan graduated from NC State University where he worked on the Mimesis project developing intelligent camera controller technology for virtual worlds and interactive narratives.

The Midlands is quickly becoming a hotbed for talented technology gurus. So, you've come up with a groundbreaking idea: a way to cure cancer, re- sequence the human genome, create hydrogen from algae, or develop a new platform for e-commerce. SET Career Fair

From Helen Fields at the Career Center:

The Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Career Fair is an excellent opportunity for students in science, engineering, computing and technology fields to meet with various employers from across the nation. The SET Career Fair will be located at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center from 11:00am-3pm Thursday February 14th, with shuttle transportation provided to and from USC. Here is more information. Here is the poster.

If you are looking for a job soon you need to attend this. Last year there we many CS employers, probably more than CS students who attended. You should also start by creating an account and uploading your resume to jobmate.

Employment Outlook

From Duncan:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projections of employment opportunities for 2006-2016 have just been published, and the future could hardly look better (Employment Outlook).

The economy in general is expected to slow more slowly with the retirement of baby boomers.

But…

  • of the nearly five million new “professional” jobs, one in six will be in computing
  • of the 845,000 new jobs in the “fastest growing” categories for which a bachelor’s degree is the appropriate background, 78% will be in computing
  • the total number of openings in computing is projected at 1,524,000, more than twice as many as in engineering (505,000), life sciences (103,000), and physical sciences (109,000) combined
  • the growth rate of 25.2% for computing employment is the largest of all the professional occupations, comparing against a national average of 10.4% and projections of 10.6% for engineering, 12.8% for life sciences, and 15.7% for physical sciences.

The largest single category for growth in computing is in “computer applications software engineers”. Backing out “computer programmers” (moving offshore and with a 4% decline projected) and “computer support specialists” (not a four-year-degree occupation), growth in computing is projected to be more than 34%.

Time to get a CS Degree?

Making predictions is very hard, especially about the future. I make it a point never to take a prediction seriously. Here is one more prediction for me to ignore:

It comes from this ACM article summarizing CRA data and predictions. If this is true, there are going to be a lot of biologists looking for a job as programmers!

CEC Career Center Opening

From Duncan:

I encourage you to stop in at the opening on Wednesday, 4pm to 6pm, next to the reading room. A number of employers will be there. I have in fact just been contacted by the recruiter for CSC (Computer Sciences Corporation). They have a location in Blythewood; the recruiter is based in Atlanta. He happens to be visiting Columbia this week and should be in attendance on Wednesday.

Starting Salaries over time

This article from the CRA gives details on starting salaries for BS in CSE majors over time. Notice that these are inflation adjusted numbers (in 2006 dollars). Starting salaries after the bubble dropped but stayed 15% higher than before the bubble.

CEC Career Center Open

Although an official Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting will be held at a later date, the College of Engineering and Computing Career Center, located behind the Reading Room in Swearingen, is pleased to announce that office hours will begin Monday, October 1, 2007. Our office hours are Monday - Friday from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

Recruiters Tonight, Wednesday and Beyond

Tonight Invista will be hosting an information session in Amoco Hall from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday SCANA will be here doing the same. As I have mentioned, we need student support in order to make these and future events successful.

These information sessions typically include an overview of the company and positions (internships, co-op and full-time) available. They also offer an opportunity to market yourself to the company directly and try to secure an interview if you have not already done so. For students not currently seeking employment, this is a chance to build your knowledge and list of potential future employers. There are usually refreshments immediately before or after information sessions. Please plan to attend.
