The Satellite Oceanography Laboratory has an immediate opening for a part-time (academic year) /full-time (Summer), undergraduate/graduate computer programmer. Duties include (1) maintenance of existing program codes and (2) development of new program codes in support of ongoing satellite data management and scientific research activities. The lab primarily focuses on real time data acquisition and quality control of oceanographic observations from satellites. This position offers a motivated student the opportunity to build their programming skills outside of the classroom. Our research group seeks innovative students that can complete tasks with limited supervision.

Applicants must have a strong interest in computer applications programming and should be pursuing an undergraduate degree in computer science, IT, computer engineering, or a related field. Candidates should have practical experience with a base language (i.e., FORTRAN, MATLAB or IDL) and must be willing to learn new languages.Familiarity with the UNIX/LINUX operating environment is a plus.

The position will be filled for the Summer semester 2008 (max 30 hrs/wk), with an employment extension based upon performance. The applicant must be able to work a regular schedule between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm (M-F) at our facility in Satellite Oceanography Laboratory (EWS 508).
